Djo - Detroit, MI - April 28th 2025

Djo Gives An Unforgettable Performance At The Masonic Temple Theater

After two years of musical silence from the alternative indie star, Djo debuted his junior album, “The Crux,” on April 4th, 2025. The album was quickly praised upon release, and the artist kicked off his “Back On You” world tour soon after.

After weeks of touring, Djo (known as Joe Keery) and his band arrived in Detroit, Michigan, performing at the Masonic Temple Theater on April 28th.

The show was opened by Post Animal, a Chicago-based rock band, of which Djo himself is an ex-member. The band was met by a lively, welcoming crowd. Post Animal began their performance with the song “Gelatin Mode,” a buzzy, exciting tune with lyrics exploring the impatient, unfamiliar feelings of love.

“It’s a pleasure to be here, this is madness!”

lead singer Dalton Allison hollered to the crowded theatre, earning excited shrieks from the fans in reply.

To the surprise of an unsuspecting crowd, Post Animal welcomed Djo on stage near the end of their opening set. This pushed the night into motion, garnering cheers from the crowd at their first sight of the artist. Post Animal’s show ended with “Ralphie,” a tale of broken hearted lyrics, the singer speaking of how “I can’t tell this girl what’s on my mind,” as Djo performed an impressive guitar solo beside him. Post Animal thanked the crowd, sending love to the city of Detroit before exiting the stage, the colourful lighting fading to black.

The fans faded into quiet chattering as the stage crew prepared for the entrance of Djo.

Flashing lights and the beginning chords of “Runner” introduced Djo, the main act of the late Monday night. He kept the listeners engaged with endless jokes and stories. Towards the beginning of the show, Djo proceeded to ask the crowd if they had school the next Tuesday morning, with many fans raising their hands and jumping in return. Djo’s show provided a fully immersive experience. This was achieved through the performer's quickly paced setlist, as well as his rhythmic lyrics layered over thrilling, intoxicating tunes.

Along with this, Djo’s set provided the tightly-packed crowd with gorgeous, ethereal lighting during slower songs such as “Fly” and “Charlie’s Garden,” shifting to flashing, explosive colouring for scream-worthy songs such as “Fool” and “Gap Tooth Smile.”

Nearing the end of a suspenseful night, Djo performed “End Of Beginning” with lyrics exploring the 33-year-old musician's struggle with identity, finding himself and his heart intertwined with the city of Chicago.

“You take the man out of the city, not the city out the man” chanted the fans during the bridge of the song, a mass of raised fists and clapping hands, tuning in with the artist's urgent guitar strumming.

“One more song before school tomorrow?”

questioned Djo, as the memorable night neared an end. This kicked off the artist's final performance, the song “Flash Mountain.” Djo’s band navigated towards the stage front, alongside the singer. Soon after, Post Animal re-entered, holding megaphones and digital cameras. The audience exploded into cheers, the stage now full, the blending sounds of each performer's respective instrument carrying the crowd to the end of the show.

Djo, his band, and Post Animal exited Masonic Temple Theater with an abundance of thanks and gratitude projected onto the fans, concluding Djo’s one-of-a-kind performance.
